For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve...
Mark 10:45
As United Methodist Christians, we believe that service is at the heart of who we are. In all that we do, we seek to be like Jesus, who came first to serve, not to be served. We have multiple opportunities throughout the week to volunteer your time and talents to serve others.

Impacting our community
There are many ways that we seek to impact our community for good. Check out a few of them here.
Community Dinner
On the 4th Sunday of each month at 11:45 am, we come together and break bread as a community. The dinners are held in Fellowship Hall at the church. If you’re a member of the church community, please bring a dish to share when you come to church that morning. And don’t forget to invite your friends and neighbors. If you are a new visitor or just wish to drop in for a meal and fellowship, no need to bring food, just come and SHARE OUR TABLE! Your participation and support are greatly appreciated!
Cross-Line Community
Cross-Lines provides people in the Kansas City area who are affected by poverty with services and opportunities that encourage self-confidence, meet the needs of today, and provide the tools for future self-sufficiency. Shawnee United Methodist Church, along with other churches and businesses in the community, team with Cross-Lines to tackle the problems of poverty in Wyandotte County and the surrounding areas. We provide meals once per month in KCK, with different small church groups taking a turn at serving. We also collect food, clothing, and care package items for the homeless throughout the year to help Cross-Lines meet the demand for outreach into the community.
Mentoring and Support
Shawnee United Methodist Church is actively engaged in helping elementary school children with clothes, food, and mentoring young students. We love being so close to several local schools and love helping the educational community when we can.
Heart to Heart International
Heart to Heart International works to improve access to health through the United States and the world. Several times throughout the year we send a team of volunteers to help assemble health kits. These are distributed in the immediate aftermath of disasters around the world.

Volunteer FAQ
How do I volunteer?
Aside from the ways listed above, there are still plenty more options to get involved here at Shawnee UMC. We invite you to fill out the form above and one of our staff would be more than happy to help you find a way to serve.
How do I volunteer with kids?
There's nothing we take more seriously in the church than the safety of minors and those with intellectual disabilities. Everyone who volunteers with kids and youth must be Safe Gatherings certified, which involved both a thorough local, state, and federal background check, and an in-depth training. Please reach out to the church office about beginning this process. Scholarship to defray costs are also available on an as needed basis.
How do I volunteer with music?
Getting connected with our choir is a great way to get your foot in the door with music here at Shawnee UMC. Our choir meets for practice at 7pm on Wednesday nights here at the church. Our music director, Avaree Norman, can also be reached via email by clicking the button below.
How do I volunteer with students?
This is an area of ministry where we are looking to grow! If you have a passion for helping middle and high schoolers know and love God, please reach out to the church office for next steps.
