Joining the Church… Beginning the Wesleyan Way of Life
Are you thinking about church membership?
Shawnee is a United Methodist Church. Our heritage dates to its founding by John Wesley in late 18th century England. Mr. Wesley looked at the world around him and knew that the church could have an impact for the good not just of individuals but for the society as a whole. Early Methodists met weekly in small communities following these three General Rules for Christian Living…
“First: Do No Harm” This includes the health and wholeness of one’s self, but also seeking the good towards one’s family, and neighbor. It is a life of compassion and includes the care of the environment. Our rich history includes opposition to smuggling, inhumane prison conditions, slavery, drunkenness and child labor.
“Secondly: Doing Good of every possible sort, and as far as possible for all” United Methodists’ struggle for human dignity and social reform, have been a response to God’s demand for love, mercy, and justice. If you choose to become a member of a United Methodist Church, your life can continue grow and impact the world. This is the Kingdom life that Jesus taught.
“Thirdly: By attending upon the Ordinances of God” A mentor in our Senior Pastor’s spiritual life, Bishop Rueben Job, calls these ordinances “the holy habits for staying in love with God.” These habits begin to shape us and form the underpinnings for General rules one and two. These habits are: public worship, bible reading and study, private prayer and prayer for others, regular Holy Communion, fasting and abstinence from that which does bodily harm.
A Way of Living These are not rules of restriction, but rather a way of living into a life of God. It is another way of answering the question that was asked of Jesus, “Teacher, how can I get this eternal (think abundant) life?” Jesus way is to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and your neighbor as yourself. Finding a smaller group within the church for fellowship, study or service is the key to encouraging one another in the Wesleyan way of life!
